Firstly I would like to thank all the parents who came and participated in the meet the teacher night on Tuesday. I felt that went well and I hope it was beneficial and perhaps insightful for you. The presentation from the night is at the bottom of this blog post.
A reminder that class photos are tomorrow, so please ensure your children have a change of clothes for after PE if you would like them to.
Below is brief summary of what has been going on in grade 2R.
|Reading||This week in class I have been reading the book, ‘Follow the River’ written by Lydia Dabcovich.
We have used this text and the journey which the river take as a metaphor for our learning journey as grade 2 students. We started documenting this journey and you will hear more about this later in the year.
Also we are using this text to learn about ‘time and sequence’ words for our writing.
|Writing||This week I have had students do 1 short piece of independent writing so I can assess student writing and behaviours.
Over the next week we will be starting to learn and write Recounts focussing on language features (time and sequence words) and text structure.
We did a ‘Write Dance’ handwriting session to practice and learn movements for cursive writing, as well as starting our Nelson handwriting booklets.
|Word Work||Students have been assessed to determine lists of words which they will begin study in class. Next week we will start learning routines for word study in class.
We have reviewed vowels and starting blends eg. br, gr, gl, st, str.
|Math||We are getting to know the number 10.
We have done mental math sessions and students have demonstrated a wide range of math strategies.
|Unit of Inquiry||We have done our provocation which has involved games and vocabulary of feelings.
We also started our weekly sessions with the school counselor, Jill Wagner (email@example.com) which are on going for all G2 classes.
