Do the courses we take at Zurich International School truly prepare us for university?

Each year, we say our goodbyes to the graduating class. Their presences are missed in the hallways and classrooms and they are often spoken of and remembered well. Nevertheless, we hardly ever hear of their plans, achievements, or opinions on university life in contrast to their time at ZIS.

Ten alumni from the classes of 2010, 2011, and 2012 have shared with us the universities they attend, their fields of study, and their thoughts on whether their time at ZIS has prepared them for the thrilling yet daunting world of university.

Yael B.

Country: United States

School: University of Pennsylvania

Topic of Study: Major in Biological Basis of Behavior (basically Neuroscience), minor in Consumer Psychology

Courses taken at ZIS: AP

In what ways has ZIS prepared you for university?

  • While it was a lot to take on at the time, many APS were definitely worth completing in retrospect. This is a definite advantage because college is really short and it’s the only time in your life that you’ll get to pursue what you really want to do. In order to know what you even want to do, it’s important to take as many classes as possible. All the AP classes I took in high school really prepared me for college because essentially it’s the same material being taught as if you were to just go to the college and take it there. Other than that, I would definitely try to take advantage of the language classes offered; its’ a great distinguishing factor and honestly knowing a lot of languages will benefit you in a lot of situations throughout your life.

Manu S.

In what ways has ZIS prepared you for university?

  • ZIS was very helpful in my preparation for after high school. The college counselors were helpful in guiding us on the right path after high school ended. ZIS got me ready to be an independent person and to be able to go through any obstacles that might get in the way. Teachers as well were preparing us really well for our new chapter after high school by preparing us and teaching us what it will be like once high school is finished.

Cassy S.

Country: United Kingdom

School: University of East London

Topic of Study: Business Management

Courses taken at ZIS: AP

In what ways has ZIS prepared you for university?

  • As I’d previously gone to two different high schools, it was incredibly helpful that I was able to continue on with the AP program at ZIS. I think that the way a lot of teachers at ZIS handle the courses that they teach is very reflective of how university tutors handle their courses, so the gap between high school and university wasn’t as large. I also think that the attitude towards written work at ZIS, and the feedback that ZIS teachers give in regards to what their expectations are, is a good preparation for university and the various types of work expected from you there.

Axel N.

Country: UK

School: Strathclyde University

Topic of Study: Architecture

Courses taken at ZIS: AP

In what ways has ZIS prepared you for university?

  • ZIS has prepared me by giving me enough workload as to prepare me for the amount of work in university. That has to do with the amount of AP classes I took as well, so I guess it is more individual effort rather than the schools. However, ZIS did help me to achieve the amount of work I wanted to complete, which was very useful. ZIS offers courses that I believe are up to university standard.

In what ways has ZIS prepared you for university?

  • The high workload in IB prepared me well to deal with the amount of work you get at university, even though the learning pace is now much higher than it was at school. Also, being in an environment with people from lots of backgrounds makes it much easier to settle into a diverse student body.
