This weekend the Varsity Boys traveled to Vienna to compete in the SCIS (Sports Community of International Schools) tournament. After leaving on Thursday, they were ready to play their first game Friday morning.
In their first game they faced MIS (Munich International School), who managed to score after a sloppy mistake by Zurich. MIS managed to hold this advantage and win 1-0. Zurich’s next game went much better, beating Budapest 4-0 with goals from both Alberto Fernan (’16) and Gabriel Ecclissato (’17).
Hoping to continue their winning streak, Varsity Boys came out strong against LCG (La Châtaigneraie Geneva), winning 2-3 after two more brilliant goals by Alberto and Gabriel.
The next day Zurich faced a major rival, ISZL (International School of Zug and Lucerne). In a physically demanding game, neither teams managed to score. Two brilliant saves by Julian Wiedmann (’16) gave the Lions hope in the penalty shoot out, but ISZL won.
Playing against Warsaw for third, Zurich needed the win to go home with a medal. In a nail-biting game, Zurich beat the opposition through penalties.
Zurich placed third overall – a respectable achievement – but are hoping to win their next tournament.
