This past weekend, the Varsity football team traveled to Zollikon for their annual Northern Schools Tournament. This tournament was to distinguish which 2 teams would qualify for the 2017 SGIS national competetion. The ZIS Lions’ first opposition was TASIS, a fixture that has proven to be very physical and problematic for both sides. Despite this rough history, ZIS was able to prevail, defeating TASIS 3-0 with goals from Gabriel Ecclissato (’17), Mathew Davidson (’18) and Christian Jorgensen (17’) and a Man of the Match performance from Alejandro Graber (18’). Subsequent to a 2 hour break, the varsity team played ICS, a long-time rival looking to avenge themselves after a 4-1 loss to ZIS in the first exhibition game of the season. Despite, great efforts from Andre Da Silva (17’) and Alejandro Graber (18’), the game ended in a 4-2 loss with the man of the match going to defender Aleksander Glansk (18’). The final game of the day would be played against Basel, a skeptical fixture for ZIS as we had lost 5-1 to them earlier in the season. The game ended 3-1 in favor of ZIS, which not only shows the magnitude of individual improvement on the team, but also how team chemistry and morale is rapidly evolving as the season progresses. The victory was largely pursuant to a man of the match performance from Ben Nauer (17’) as well as goals from Mathew Davidson (18’), Sam Reza (19’) and the man himself, Ben Nauer (17’). Overall the weekend proved to be very beneficial for the Varsity Football Team as not only did they manage to qualify for the 2017 SGIS tournament but also evolve as a team and grow as individual football players.
