In a school filled with talent, such as ZIS, sports forms one of the major aspects of a student’s life during their time at the school. Whether it’s a passion for football, disconnecting from school through running, a friend getting you into volleyball, or simply wanting to let out your stress and anger on the rugby field, the first sports season of the year always proves to be immensely popular among ZIS students, and this year is no exception.
The Lions’ football teams have been very successful, with the boys beating strong rivals such as British School in Paris (BSP) in a friendly game away and a tough win against the International School of Basel (ISB). The girls also had a strong start to their season, beating direct rivals Munich and Inter-Community school Zurich and, most noticeably, winning the always-heated derby against the International School of Zug and Luzern 5 goals to 0. Both teams competed strongly at ISSTs, with the boys managing 5th and the girls coming 2nd.
The cross country team had an undefeated season, with races against other international schools as well as external races such as running a marathon as a team in Basel. Furthermore, the team enjoyed several mountain training weekends, in preparation for the season finale at ISSTs, which they impressively won. The not only won overall, but also varsity girls, varsity boys and junior varsity boys won their respective categories.
The volleyball team was extremely successful especially with their new coach, Coach Taylor, starting fresh this year with a new team. However it must be said that they did concede three points at the annual Varsity Girls’ Volleyball vs. Varsity Boys’ Rugby volleyball game…
The boys rugby team has also had a strong start to the season, winning friendlies against last year’s ISST final opposition, Munich, as well as winning both the annual invitational Zuoz tournament and the yearly Rugby 7s tournament, and finally topping the season with a win at ISSTs at home .
Overall, the fall season has been highly successful for all the ZIS teams, with hopes to carry on this run for the next semester.
Training for the winter season has already started for all teams, including Ski Team, varsity and junior varsity boys and girls Basketball, and Cross-Country Skiing. The teams look forward to competing at the usual annual competitions and are training hard to bring back many trophies.
Go Lions! best.
